Choosing Yoga Teacher Training is a big decision. Not only is it a big financial commitment, it also requires a lot of time and energy. This is a life changing event. Please don’t take this decision lightly.
Please take the time to do your research and find the style and the teacher that is best for you.
Here are some pointers on choosing a Yoga Teacher Training Program.
1) Meet, and practice with, the director of each school you are considering. You will be spending a lot of time with this person. Find out if your personalities click. Take at least thre classes with each teacher offering a yoga school in your area. Does that person speak to you on a personal level? Find out if the vision and ideals of the school are similar to yours.
2) While it is not a requirement to become a yoga teacher, a school that is registered by the Yoga Alliance should teach a well rounded curriculum and will enable you to apply for your RYT designation. This will help you in finding work as a yoga teacher. You can search for Yoga Alliance Registered schools here.
3) Research the curriculum. Ask to see the Teacher Training Manual and textbooks. Anyone can teach you how to teach a basic flow and give you some pointers on alignment. A thorough understanding of yoga is much more than that. Asana is only a small part of truly connecting with the practice of Yoga. You will become a much greater teacher if you develop an understanding and interest in Yoga Philosophy, Pranayama, Meditation, Ayurveda, and study anatomy and alignment in depth.
4) Talk to current and/or former students of each school. Find out what they liked and what they didn’t like about the school they attended. Do they honestly feel like they received a well rounded education in yoga and are qualified to teach classes?
